A huge fire involving a gas cylinder has shut down a major train line between Suffolk and London.
Thick black smoke was seen for miles after a fire broke out at a recycling centre in Great Blakenham near Ipswich.
National Rail issued a ‘do not travel’ warning to passengers after the blaze next to the railway line.
The fire has closed the entire main line through Ipswich, including trains to London Liverpool Street, with disruption expected until the end of the day.
Residents in the area were told to stay away and keep their windows and doors shut due to ‘lots of smoke coming from the scene,’ Essex Fire Service said.
What to do if you are travelling through Ipswich

The suspected gas cylinder fire is set to affect travel through Ipswich until the end of the day.
Greater Anglia has issued a ‘do not travel warning’ between Ipswich and Norwich, and Cambridge and Ely.
Tickets are accepted for the following services.
- East Midland Railway between Norwich and Peterborough
- London Underground Liverpool Street to Kings Cross
- Great Northern / Thameslink between Kings Cross to Peterborough
- Cross Country between Stansted Airport and Peterborough
Train passengers told ‘do not travel’ after fire

National Rail has issued a ‘do not travel’ warning between Ipswich, Norwich, Cambridge and Ely after a fire at a recycling centre in Great Blakenham.
All lines have been closed as the fire may involve a gas cylinder, National Rail said.
Footage shows thick smoke and raging flames as fire crews approached the site at Sackers Recycling northwest of Ipswich.
Greater Anglia trains are affected, and it is trying to source rail replacement vehicles.
Here are all the affected train routes.
- Between Ipswich / Norwich and London Liverpool Street, and between Peterborough and Colchester / Ipswich
- Between Cambridge and Ipswich
British Airways suspends London-Beijing flights

British Airways is set to stop flights between London and Beijing within months.
The airline’s owner IAG SA announced it will halt services from October 26 until November 2025, Bloomberg reports.
However, daily flights will continue to operate to Shanghai and Hong Kong.
Passengers with a booking between London and Beijing will get the option to rebook or get a full refund, the outlet reports citing BA.
It comes as the Russian airspace remains closed to most airlines following the invasion of Ukraine which led to Russian airlines being banned across the EU and North America.
Luis Gallego, the CEO of IAG SA, told earlier demand in China and Asia was weakening, the outlet reports.
IAG SA was contacted for a comment.

Update on Elizabeth line disruption

Elizabeth lines services between London Paddington and Heathrow Terminals are disrupted due to a faulty signal.
Some lines between the stations are blocked, meaning trains could be cancelled, delayed by up to 20 minutes or revised.
Now National Rail has said the disruption is expected until 2pm.
Heathrow Express trains are not affected.
Crash near Heathrow Airport causes delays

A crash near Heathrow Airport is causing congestion on the M4 in Hillingdon.
The smash happened on the M4 westbound exit slip at junction J4, meaning drivers from London might struggle to get into Heathrow terminals from the motorway.
Traffic is expected to resume to normal by 11.30am, the National Highways alert says.
Congestion on the M25 after overturned vehicle

Drivers are warned of congestion on the M25 between junction J5 and J6 in Kent west of Sevenoaks.
Traffic in the area is slow after an overturned vehicle which has been cleared.
Delays hit London Euston again

Travel to and from London Euston has been hampered for a second day following disruption yesterday.
Today’s disruption is due to a points failure between Euston and Watford Junction which has blocked some lines.
Trains between the stations could be delayed by up to 10 minutes, cancelled or revised.
Disruption is expected until 12 midday, National Rail said.
Avanti West Coast and London Northwestern Railway trains are affected.
If your Avanti train is cancelled, your ticket is valid on the Avanti West Coast train immediately before or after the cancelled service.
All-day disruption on South Western Railway

Passengers have been warned of disruption to journeys between Guildford and Woking which is set to last all day.
This is due to a points failure, meaning trains through these stations could be revised or diverted to an alternative track via Cobham and Stoke d’Abernon.
Here are all the affected lines.
- Between Portsmouth Harbour, Portsmouth & Southsea, Southampton Central, Guildford, Fareham, Haslemere and London Waterloo
- Between Southampton Central and Woking
Some local buses in the Woking, Guildford, Weybridge and Walton-on-Thames areas are accepting tickets at no extra cost.
Minor delays on Jubilee line

The Jubilee line is experiencing some delays, the latest TfL status update shows.
This is due to shortage of trains, the transport authority said.
Delays between London Waterloo and Weybridge

There are also delays between Waterloo station and Weybridge after a police incident near the railway between Barnes Bridge and Hounslow this morning.
While the lines have reopened, passengers travelling through Hounslow might still face train cancellations, delays of up to 20 minutes or changes to service until about 10am.

If you are heading to Heathrow Airport on the Elizabeth line this morning, make sure to plan for some delays to the journey.
A faulty signalling system closed the line between Abbey Wood and Heathrow Terminal 4, and between Shenfield and Terminal 5.
Trains may be cancelled, delayed by up to 20 minutes or revised, National Rail said.
While the lines have now reopened, the impact of the disruption is expected to last until 10am.
